Project Description

Expand the brand of a medical biotech company by developing a distinctive visual system that reflected their data-centric focus, giving their pages and decks more texture and identity while staying grounded in the science they work in.

Responsibilities

A medical biotech company brought me on to expand their brand and give their materials more visual depth. The company is unnamed here. I researched their scientific focus and developed a set of textural brand motifs rooted in medical imagery and data representation.

Goal

The company’s existing materials were clean but sparse, and they wanted something with more character to build on. Their real distinguishing feature was data, so I set out to create a visual language that felt both scientific and data-driven, something that could live quietly in the background of their materials without overwhelming the content.

Approach

I researched the fields they specialize in and looked for medical imagery with visual potential. I landed on histopathology slides as a starting point, drawing on samples like gastrointestinal mucosa, intestinal villi, and invasive keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma. From there, I wanted to abstract these into something that read less like a literal slide and more like data.

Process

To make the imagery feel data-driven, I developed a series of custom filters using AI and refined them until one produced the effect I was after, a texture that read like a combination of individual data points and a larger array. I applied this treatment to the histopathology slides, abstracting them into subtle, data-style motifs that could sit behind their pages and decks as background texture.

The motifs

Each motif started as a real histopathology slide and was abstracted into a vague, textural pattern. The result kept a connection to the company’s scientific work while reading as an intentional, data-forward design element rather than a clinical image.
